Background

Chevron is an American multinational energy corporation, originally known as the Standard Oil Company of California (Socal). It is headquartered in San Ramon, California, and is active in more than 180 countries. Chevron is engaged in every aspect of the oil and natural gas industries, including hydrocarbon exploration and production; refining, marketing, and transport; chemical manufacturing and sales; and power generation.

Challenges

Chevron needed to move large, critical spare parts (machine parts, motors, anchors, and valves) from one warehouse to another to support operations such as oil drilling and shipping. In the past, warehouse activities were typically documented manually on paper and subsequently entered into the SAP system by users once they returned to their workstations. This process proved to be intricate and time-consuming, leading to various challenges, including:

  • Limited and difficult access to data due to stationary data system
    • Cause: The data was confined within a “wired-only” SAP system, hindering its fluid movement.
    • Effect: Personnel was to rely on paper-based processes to manage inventory. As a result, the data had to undergo redundant handling, increasing the likelihood of errors and time consumption.
  • Inventory management compromised
    • Cause: Inventory cycle count, stock transfer, and goods transfers were difficult to request and manage due to the complicated SAP interface. Technicians were required to navigate through several screens that presented irrelevant information.
    • Effect: Efficiency and productivity were hindered, leading to suboptimal data quality.
  • Decreased operational efficiency.
    • Cause: The complexity of the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system was further exacerbated by the need for personnel to memorize T-codes, acceptable inputs based on various scenarios, and different catalogs
    • Effect: Maintenance personnel struggled to navigate the system, resulting in a reduction in their overall performance and productivity.

Solutions

Chevron aimed to optimize its warehouse management applications starting in its U.S. and Gulf of Mexico locations. Their approach involved streamlining the user interface through automation, enabling the use of handheld devices instead of manual paper-based processes for the frequently used SAP transactions. However, the process of dispatching goods using handheld devices posed a significant challenge due to the complexity of the SAP UI.

Liquid UI For Handheld Scanguns:

Chevron utilized Liquid UI for Handheld Scanguns which was customized to tackle SAP’s most significant user complaints such as excessive, redundant, and inaccurate data entry. The result was a significant improvement in the usability of their SAP application, empowering Chevron’s operational team with the necessary tools to enhance productivity.

Liquid UI Capability - Seamless SAP System Integration:

The direct integration of Liquid UI with Chevron’s SAP system without any ABAP modifications had several effects. Firstly, it enabled Chevron to make necessary changes to their SAP system without impacting its stability and supportability. Secondly, it simplifies the development process, allowing Chevron to create and implement changes quickly and efficiently. Lastly, it promotes a cost-effective approach as it eliminates the need for additional technical resources or external consultants to manage ABAP modifications.

By partnering with Liquid UI, Chevron increased application reliability by 98%. Furthermore, user errors and time spent on data entry were reduced by eliminating the previous manual paper-reliant process.

Results

  • Increased productivity/data accuracy to 100%.
  • Improved application integrity by 98%.
  • Reduced steps involved in WM transactions save 70% of users' time.
  • Enhanced cycle count process efficiency by 66%.
  • Processes optimized: MM03, IQ09, ZLI11N, ZLX03, LT10, MIGO.
  • Role-based launchpads saved users time and effort.
  • Improved ROI through SAP WM customization by mobilizing the solution along with validating the data entries.
  • Eliminated costly user errors.
  • Shortened the review process from hours to minutes.
  • SAP ERP use is more flexible and accessible

Liquid UI in Action: Simplification for Chevron

Liquid UI developed custom launchpads that simplified Chevron’s frequently used transactions by presenting user-friendly interfaces while preserving the existing business process.

  • Role-based launchpads: The implementation of role-based launchpads resulted in significant time and effort savings for users. Upon logging in, handheld users are presented with a task-specific set of buttons, allowing them to complete their responsibilities efficiently. Though Chevron provides access to all transactions and complexities of SAP ERP, a simplified set of controls directs users' attention to their designated tasks.
  • MM03 transaction: The simplified MM03 screen displays critical item details within the warehouse without requiring extensive navigation through multiple tabs and screens.
  • IQ09 transaction: The IQ09 transaction screen streamlined to allow for simplified searching by material when it arrives without a corresponding part number or SAP number tag..
  • ZLI11N: A customized ZLI11N screen displays only the necessary information for the inventory counting process, based on the inventory record. This resulted in a significant functional improvement, as the process became portable and more efficient.
  • LT10: The LT10 screen was customized to enable personnel to process parts in close proximity, facilitating bin or sea container packing, and the transfer of stock between bins on the spot, eliminating the need for physical movement.
  • ZLX03 report: ZLX03 report screen was modified to include search options based on different criteria to locate parts in the inventory.
  • MIGO Transaction: The MIGO Transaction screen was simplified and tailored the user interface to shield users from the dynamic complexities.
  • MIGO Goods Issue: The MIGO Goods Issue screen was simplified to issue goods and update information in SAP without navigating to different tabs.
  • MIGO Goods Transfer: The MIGO Goods Transfer screen was simplified to one simplified screen with the necessary fields to move the item from one location to another.
  • MIGO Goods Receipt: The MIGO Goods Receipt screen was customized to facilitate scanning and entering details for one item at a time without the need to navigate through different tabs in standard SAP. Additionally, a summary of the scanned items is displayed before the final posting for verification, improving accuracy and efficiency in the goods receipt process.
